Minimum Age Requirements for Pets on Pets Connected

28 Apr, 2025

At PetsConnected.com, the wellbeing of pets is our first priority.
To protect young animals and ensure they are properly cared for, we enforce minimum age requirements before pets can be advertised for sale or rehoming.

Here’s what you need to know:

๐Ÿถ Puppies and Kittens

  • Minimum age: 8 weeks old before they can leave their mother

Puppies and kittens need vital time with their mothers and littermates to learn important social and behavioural skills.
Separating them too early can cause emotional, behavioural, and health issues later in life.

Key Points:

  • They should be fully weaned onto solid food before leaving.

  • They should have begun basic socialisation with humans and siblings.

  • Responsible breeders will never rush this natural development.

๐Ÿฐ Rabbits and Small Mammals

  • Minimum age: 8 weeks old

Like puppies and kittens, rabbits and small mammals (such as guinea pigs) also need time to develop independence and strength before leaving their mothers.

We do not allow the sale of rabbits or other small mammals younger than 8 weeks.

๐Ÿฆœ Birds

  • Minimum age: Varies by species (generally weaned)

Parrots, budgies, and other pet birds should be fully weaned and independent before rehoming.
This ensures they are healthy, strong, and able to eat properly on their own.

If unsure, sellers must specify the bird’s age and weaning status clearly in the advert.

๐ŸŸ Fish

  • Minimum age: Appropriate size and maturity

While there is no strict "week" age for fish, they must be fully developed enough to thrive in a new aquarium environment.
Young fry (baby fish) must not be sold unless strong enough to survive independently.

๐ŸŽ Horses and Ponies

  • Minimum age: 6 months old minimum

Foals must stay with their mothers until at least 6 months of age for proper health and development.
Selling a horse or pony younger than this is not permitted on Pets Connected.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Why Minimum Age Rules Matter

Following minimum age guidelines:

  • Supports the healthy physical and emotional development of animals

  • Reduces the risk of behavioural problems later

  • Encourages responsible breeding and selling practices

  • Protects new owners from unexpected veterinary issues

Thank you for helping us put animal welfare first.
At PetsConnected.com, responsible care starts from day one — and every animal deserves the best beginning to their new life.
